Resort Village of Big Shell is adjacent the lake and Resort Village of Echo Bay is adjacent the lake. Shell Lake is partially within Spiritwood No. 496 (Rural Municipality).

Emerald Lake Regional Park is 13km WNW, Memorial Lake Regional Park is 11km SSW, Fur Lake Recreation Site is 19km WSW and Martins Lake Regional Park is 26km NNW of Shell Lake.
