There are no parks or communities on the lake. Heron Lake is partially within Day Star 87 (Reserve), partially within Mount Hope No. 279 (Rural Municipality) and partially within Big Quill No. 308 (Rural Municipality).
Mount Hope Wildlife Management Unit is 29km ESE, Raymore Recreation Site is 22km ENE, Wynyard Regional Park is 22km SSW and Touchwood Hills Post Provincial Park is 25km NNW of Heron Lake.
The lake was officially named on 1963-04-18.
