Horseshoe Lake Wildlife Refuge is partially within the lake.
Whitesand Regional Park is 19km E, Good Spirit Lake Provincial Park is 9.3km SSE, Whitesand River Recreation Site is 13km WSW and Patterson Lake Game Preserve is 19km SSE of Horseshoe Lake.
The lake was officially named on 1956-08-02.
